The Founder's Day Ceremony honors Bacon Academy founder, Pierpont Bacon by celebrating a Bacon Academy graduate that has gone on to become accomplished in their area of expertise.
The Bacon Academy Board of Trustees will honor Bacon Academy graduate Jeffery A. Fletcher at a ceremony on May 21th. Jeffrey A. Fletcher spent his entire childhood educated in the Colchester school system, graduating from Bacon Academy in 1975. While residing in Colchester, he was educated with a wealth of knowledge about his heritage from his mother Ruby and Calvin, who were avid collectors of African American artifacts and memorabilia from her childhood into her adult life.
Jeffrey excelled in a number of extracurricular activities at Bacon Academy where the passion of Basketball afforded him a four year scholarship to the University of New Haven. After graduating college he played semi-professional basketball for 2 years with the Pittsfield Shamrocks of the defunct Eastern Basketball Association. He spent 14 years employed by the State of Connecticut Department of Mental Health, and 22 years on the New Haven Police Dept until his retirement in 2015.
Jeffrey is currently the President of the African American Collections, Inc. and the Executive Director of the Ruby & Calvin Fletcher African American History Museum located in the historic district at 952 East Broadway Stratford, Connecticut.
He has been a trailblazer in the education of others while bringing his museum to life. The museum was recently granted a grant from the Department of Economic and Community Development of the State of Connecticut and will move to a space double its current size in the fall of 2025. The museum was also added to the Connecticut Freedom Trail in 2024.
All of these accomplishments are due to his ongoing dedication and commitment to preserving, educating and sharing his family's history. Jeffrey currently resides in Branford Connecticut with his wife Barbara and daughter Victoria.
