The Founder's Day Ceremony honors Bacon Academy founder, Pierpont Bacon by celebrating a Bacon Academy graduate that has gone on to become accomplished in their area of expertise.
2023 Founder's Day Recipient
Captain John Jones
The Bacon Academy Board of Trustees honored Bacon Academy graduate Captain John Jones at a ceremony on May 17th. John graduated from Bacon Academy in 1967. During high school, John was part of the All-State Basketball Champion team in 1967 and an early member of the Jr. Fire Department. John retired from the Colchester Volunteer Fire Department on April 30th, 2023, after 60 years of service with the rank of Police Captain. During his years of service, John was a police officer for the city of Willimantic, CT, Director of Operations for Colchester, and EMS Instructor. John has been previously recognized as Firefighter of the Year, Officer of the Year, and Citizen of the Year. John Jones was chosen as this year’s Founder’s Day Award recipient to honor all his years of service and dedication to helping the town of Colchester and its citizens.
Class officers from Bacon Academy, as well as other students, took part in the ceremony. Guest speakers included Superintendent Daniel P. Sullivan, III, Bacon Academy’s principal Amy Begué, and Board of Education Chairman Alexander Oliphant. Dave Shea, Don Lee, Andreas Bisbikos and trustee Arthur Liverant, as well as John Jone’s daughter, Jan Jones Maynard spoke about their connections and appreciation to John. A Reception followed in the Stage Room at the Colchester Federated Church.
