2024 Capital Campaign

The Mission of oue campaign is to bring the Community of Colchester, old and young, together to recognize the value and importance of our historic landmarks and to ask for their support to preserve and restore them so they may, once again, be useful to the community

The Bacon Academy Trustees are tasked with the preservation and maintenance of three of Colchester's most important historic landmarks: Historic Bacon Academy, The DAR/Nathaniel Foote House, and Day Hall. The trustees became a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in 2011. This year, the Trustees of Historic Bacon Academy have launched a Capital Campaign to raise much-needed funds to support the preservation, restoration, and continued use of the most widely recognized local landmark in Colchester, Bacon Academy. They aim to bring the community together to educate them about this building, help them recognize that it is essential to preserve this piece of history and seek their support in restoring these landmarks for future use.

Your support is critical to their success.

This restoration process will not happen overnight. The Trustees have developed a phased process that will restore the building to its original beauty and usefulness.

Phase 1: Address the leaking roof, chimneys, and rotting cupola, which are critical to protect and preserve the building.

Phase 2: Address Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance issues, including a ramped entrance and ADA-compliant bathroom on the first floor of the building. After phase two, the first floor of the building will once again be available for use.

Phase 3: Address access to the upper floors of the building by adding an elevator, making them accessible to all. This will ensure everyone can explore the building's history and architecture. This phase includes ADA-compliant restrooms on each floor of the building, further enhancing the building's inclusivity.

Phase 4: Address heating, air conditioning, plumbing, sewer, peeling paint, and any other non-structural needs to make the building once again fully functional.

None of this will be possible without the support of the community. Together we can do great things. While the task ahead is difficult, it is not impossible if we work together. Our history is important, as is our future and they are intertwined in this historic landmark, Bacon Academy. Will you join us in our efforts to preserve, restore, and make this building useful again to our community
